Here’s How to Clip Your Nails to Prevent an Ingrown Toenail

Have you dealt with the discomfort of an ingrown toenail? If so, you know just how painful and frustrating this foot issue can be.

Ingrown toenails develop when the edge of your toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing symptoms like redness, swelling, and even infection.

If you’re not careful, this infection can lead to complications affecting your mobility and overall health. The good news is that proper nail care can prevent this common problem.

At Arlington/Mansfield Foot & Ankle Centers, with offices in Arlington and Mansfield, Texas, our board-certified podiatrists specialize in diagnosing and treating foot and ankle conditions, including ingrown toenails.

Our expert team provides personalized guidance to help you maintain healthy feet and avoid painful issues, including the right way to care for your toenails.

If you want to avoid an ingrown toenail, read for our step-by-step guide on how to clip your nails.

Step 1: Use the right tools

Before you start clipping your nails, make sure you have the right tools on hand. Using improper tools increases your risk of ingrown toenails and other foot problems. Here’s what you’ll need:

Nail clippers

Choose a pair of toenail clippers designed for toenails. These are designed to cut through the thicker layers of keratin. Avoid using scissors or fingernail clippers, as they may not provide a clean cut.

Nail file

A nail file helps smooth the edges of your nails after clipping.

Warm water

Soaking your feet in warm water before clipping can soften your nails, making them easier to cut. Alternatively, be ready to cut your nails after showering or bathing.

Towel

You’ll want a clean towel on hand to dry your feet after soaking.

Step 2: Soak your feet

For the best cut, soak your feet in warm water for 10-15 minutes before trimming. This helps soften your toenails and makes them easier to clip.

This step also cleanses your feet, reducing your risk of infection. Add a bit of Epsom salt to the water for added benefits, such as soothing any existing discomfort and reducing inflammation.

If you prefer, try to schedule nail clippings immediately after your shower or bath.

Step 3: Dry thoroughly

After you soak them, dry your feet thoroughly with a clean towel. Keeping your feet dry helps prevent complications and facilitates a better clipping experience.

Make sure to dry between your toes, as moisture left between your toes can lead to fungal infections!

Step 4: Cut straight across

When clipping your toenails, always cut straight across. Avoid rounding the corners, as this can encourage your nail to grow into your skin, leading to an ingrown toenail.

Use the nail clippers to make small, straight cuts across each nail, ensuring you don’t cut too short. To avoid cutting into your skin, try to leave a small amount of white at the tip of your nail.

Step 5: Smooth the edges

After clipping, use a nail file to smooth the edges of your toenails. This step helps prevent sharp edges from snagging on socks or shoes, reducing the risk of tears and further injury.

Be sure to file gently and stick with filing in one direction to avoid splitting your nails.

Step 6: Avoid your cuticles

Your cuticles act as barriers against bacteria and other nail issues, so it’s best to leave them intact. In other words, cutting back your cuticles increases your risk of infection and ingrown toenails.

If you’re frustrated by large cuticles, talk to your Arlington/Mansfield Foot & Ankle Centers provider for advice, or try gently pushing them back with a clean, soft tool.

Step 7: Take preventive measures

Regular nail care is key to preventing ingrown toenails and maintaining overall foot health. Depending on how fast they grow, trim your toenails every few weeks or as needed.

You’ll also want to be sure to wear the right shoes for your feet. Tight or ill-fitting shoes can press on your toenails, causing them to grow into the skin. At the same time, footwear that fits properly and provides adequate support significantly reduces your risk of developing ingrown toenails.
